Indie is the New Major

Most musicians set out to become famous for their talents. Looking at the evolution of the Music Industry, most of them are able to do this with the aid of a major record label. A new trend is the movement of artists deciding to go Independent as an artist instead. There are many that are known under the label of being an "underground artist." These musicians range from genres such as Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, Rap and Country.

Many music artists are faced with the challenge of struggling to gain the attention of major record labels when they are just starting out but shortly after, they are able to see all of the benefits associated with being an Indie Artist.

Some of those benefits are as follows:

As an Indie musician, an artist is able to gain a much bigger following for himself or herself.
Artists are able to get a bigger profit by doing their own work because they don’t have to worry about other people who need to be paid for their services.
Indie Artists are able to work on their own schedules as opposed to having someone tell them everything that they need to do.
Once an artist is able to make a name for them, they can then present themselves to a major record label that will be ready to invest more into them.

But there is also a flip side to being an Indie Artists instead of being signed to a major record label. While speaking with a friend of mine who is an up and coming music producer he mentioned "... One of the major positive things that I've seen coming from a record label is their own ability to provide you with better marketing." They have the ability to plug you into markets and provide a better push for you as an artist. They have this ability because they have greater finances available that an Indie artist doesn't (unless they have somehow come across a million dollars).

Being that I am currently working on Marketing concepts for some local music artists, I always make it an early goal to find out which direction they want to take as an artist. I want to make sure that I'm doing all that I can so that they are getting their needs met by me.
